Description
This stage offers two alternatives: through Honto (yellow) or Valcarlos (green)
Through Honto (Napoleon Route): This is the first stage of the French Way, demanding and beautiful. Following the main route, known as the Napoleon Route, we cross the Pyrenees over the Ports of Cize. The route begins in Saint Jean Pied de Port, at 183 meters above sea level, and ascends to reach 1,438 meters at the Lepoeder pass. Then, the journey descends through an impressive beech forest until Roncesvalles, located at 959 meters above sea level. In total, it involves a positive elevation gain of 1,272 meters and a negative elevation loss of 480 meters.
Through Valcarlos: This path is the mandatory alternative in the winter months (from November 1 to March 31). It runs through the Valcarlos valley, staying close to the national road and at a lower altitude than the Napoleon Route. In case of snow, adverse weather conditions, or physical endurance doubts, this is the recommended option. Although its scenic value may be somewhat lower, it offers greater safety. Its positive elevation gain is 885 meters.
