Description
The second stage of the Spiritual Variant descends from the Monastery of A Armenteira to the Arousa estuary. Although it is a long day, the route profile is favourable and presents no major difficulties apart from a moderate climb after Ponte Arnelas.
Immediately after the start, the Way enters the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga, a beautiful trail that follows the Armenteira River among waterfalls, footbridges, old mills and lush riverside woodland. The rock is often wet and can be slippery, so proceed with caution.
On leaving the forest, the landscape opens onto the Albariño vineyards of O Salnés. The route continues through Barrantes and Cabanelas, following the banks of the Armenteira and Umia rivers until it reaches Ponte Arnelas, a good place to rest and stock up.
From here, the Way climbs gently through Tremoedo, among small villages, stone crosses, fountains and more vineyards. After crossing the high point, the descent towards the Arousa estuary begins, with the estuary appearing in the distance between pine woods and eucalyptus trees.
The final kilometres run alongside the sea, beneath the Illa de Arousa bridge and opposite the beaches of O Terrón. A pedestrian walkway finally leads to Vilanova de Arousa, home to the ferry terminal from which the Traslatio boats depart for Pontecesures.
This is a very varied and pleasant stage, beginning among mills and waterfalls, crossing the wine-growing landscape of O Salnés and ending by the sea.
Recommendations
Footwear with good grip is recommended for the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga. If you plan to complete the next stage by boat, book in advance and confirm the departure time, as sailings depend on the tides and weather conditions.
